Natural oils like coconut, castor, and argan are widely valued in hair care for their nourishing and restorative properties. They support scalp health, reduce dryness, and strengthen the hair over time. However, they often fall short in delivering key sensory and cosmetic benefits such as frizz control, light feel, even spread, and long-lasting shine. In high humidity or high damage scenarios, natural oils alone may not provide the finish or manageability that consumers expect.
This is where silicone additives offer targeted advantages. When carefully selected and properly formulated, silicones work alongside natural oils to improve surface performance. They smooth the hair cuticle, reduce friction, enhance shine, and create a lightweight protective barrier that locks in moisture and resists humidity. These improvements help reduce breakage, boost detangling, and deliver a clean, silky finish without compromising the nourishing benefits of the oils.
At Resil Chemicals, we developed a custom formulation that combines natural oils with specially crafted silicone conditioning agents to boost hair care performance. In a comparative study, two samples were tested: a control Base Oil (natural oils only) and a Modified Oil with silicones. The silicone-enhanced formulation significantly reduced dry combing force (Fig 1), indicating easier detangling and less mechanical stress on hair fibers. It also improved hair suppleness (Fig 2), showing greater flexibility and resistance to breakage under tension.

These performance enhancements are attributed to the film-forming and lubricating properties of silicones, which create a protective layer over the hair shaft. The modified formulation maintained a non-greasy feel and was compatible with various natural oil systems.
