Lactive®: The new frontier of bioactive ingredients for cosmetics and medical devices

Lactive® is the bioactivated form of lactoferrin, a patented blend of synergistic peptides, inspired by Nature and evolved by Technology. Lactive® was awarded as Silver Best Ingredient at the Innovation Awards 2022 at In-Cosmetics® Latin America.

Lactive® originates from the observation of the extraordinary mechanism by which infants, thanks to natural enzymes, generate synergistic peptides from breast milk, creating an active self-defence. It contains several peptides including lactoferricin, an amphipathic peptide of 25 amino acids whose characteristic feature is that it interacts with membranes, compromising their integrity. This gives it selective antifungal and antibacterial activity, thus also having an exceptional prebiotic effect. Lactoferricin also has effects documented in international literature for its antiviral activity, on inflammation, wound healing and glycation inhibition by multiple mechanisms, which also give it properties towards ageing. Lactive® has also made these natural defences available for topical application thanks to the specific patented technology of bioactivation with enzymes.

Applications and suggested use

Lactive® has proven to be extremely active, possessing several properties in a single ingredient, given its high and selective activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeasts, and the numerous studies on its positive effects on skin and mucous membrane health. This offers the possibility of being used in both cosmetics and medical devices, being suitable for the following applications: acne, oral cavity care, vagina care and medical devices (e.g. oral spray).

The lactoferrin bioactivation process gives Lactive® several properties, such as microbiome enhancer due to selective antimicrobial and antifungal activity, wound healing, anti-glycation and antiviral.

  • Acne, Atopic Skin, Vaginal Health: where microbiome and wound healing count

o Microbiome enhancer and selective antimicrobial activity
The antimicrobial activity of Lactive® has been evaluated against a wide range of pathogens such as those responsible for acne, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis and candidiasis.
Unlike other prebiotics, Lactive® has a dual function: it promotes probiotic and positive flora, preserves commensals, and inhibits the proliferation of harmful microorganisms at a given dosage.

    o Lactoferricin has wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties
A study by Jansenn and colleagues, published in 2021 in the Journal of Molecular Therapy Methods & Clinical Development, showed that lactoferricin can increase keratinocyte migration in vitro and improve wound healing.
Lactoferricin treatment resulted in the eradication of Bacillus pumilus, a decrease in Staphylococcus aureus and improved collagen deposition.

  • Rejuvenating properties

    o Anti-aging
The anti-glycation activity of Lactive® was evaluated in an in vitro system using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model protein and glucose as a glycation agent. Low concentrations of Lactive® (< 0.1%) were shown to decrease the glycation effect of BSA.

  • Antiviral Activity

Regarding antiviral action, in vitro tests show that Lactive® is active against SARS-CoV-2 and Herpes Virus
International literature has also shown that lactoferricin is active against: Human Immunodeficiency Virus HIV 1; Herpes simplex virus -1 and -2; Human papillomavirus HPV.

Composition and technical specifications
